Three to Stream: Shows from Jacob Swedlow, Joy & Madness; new music from Anton Barbeau
We’re devoting our usual “Three to See” concert space to rounding up some info on what local and out-of-town artists are up to as we continue to fight COVID-19. Hosting a show online or releasing new music? Message us on Instagram with details: @adavis_threetosee.
Three weekend shows from Jacob Swedlow, Joy & Madness
The live stream workhorse team of audiophiles over at Midtown Vanguard Jazz is engineering a trio of shows this weekend, beginning with a benefit show from bedrock local funk soul and R&B troupe Joy and Madness (fronted by Hans Eberbach). The proceeds will go to beloved blues haunt the Torch Club and to Sacramento Preparatory Music Academy (7 p.m. Friday August 28). Multi-instrumentalist Jacob Swedlow takes over for the weekend (7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) with two different ensembles: his “Loose Parade” Saturday finds him on vibraphone playing a mix of standards and originals with Nico Martinez on bass, Sean Nelson on drums and Mikey Escobar on tenor sax, while Sunday he gets behind the drum kit for the Jacob Swedlow Trio, joined by fellow “composers, arrangers and spontaneous improvisors” Martinez and pianist Sterling Cozza. $15 each. www.facebook.com/MidtownVanguardJazz/events.
New single ‘Manbird’ from Anton Barbeau
With touring musicians (unfortunately) finding more time on their hands to record, is 2020 becoming the year of the double album? There’s more than a few of them lurking out there, such as a new concept record laden with adoration for his native Sacramento from power pop hero Anton Barbeau. The album is self-described as “an ambitious concept trip about leaving the nest, traveling the world and finding home.” We’ll have more on “Manbird” when the whole megillah drops September 18, but for now, the buoyant first single of the same name is available to stream. Spoiler alert, fellow Sacramentans: yes, the title “Manbird” is absolutely a nod to “Lady Bird.” manbird.antonbarbeau.com.
Limited vinyl release from Danny Schneider
OK, this technically isn’t a “stream,” but the one thing we love as much as new music here at “Three to Stream” is music for a good cause. Local rocker Danny Schneider has cooked up “On the Other Side of the Window,” a slightly avant garde, Beatles psych pop-tinged album stuffed with inventive instrumentation and effects. Schneider threw it on wax to raise funds for Joshua’s House Hospice, a care facility being built for terminally ill homeless in Sacramento. Schneider is out to raise $10,000 for the facility; a $100 donation goes directly to Joshua’s House and nets you a signed vinyl record, available August 31. You can sample the tracks on Schneider’s website (hey, that’s a stream … we rebounded!) www.dannyschneider.com.
Inside Lands, from Outside Lands (Friday August 28 and Saturday August 29)
The team from San Francisco’s flagship festival Outside Lands dips into its archives — boasting some never-before-seen footage from the last dozen years of shenanigans at Golden Gate Park — and peppers in some exclusive live performances, artist interviews and other content. On deck are Elton John, Jack White, Gorillaz, Alt-J, LCD Soundsystem, Cage the Elephant, Beach House, Leon Bridges, Major Lazer and several others, with Lyrics Born hosting. www.sfoutsidelands.com/insidelands.
Looking ahead: ShelterFest (Saturday, October 10): It’s been months since we’ve done a “Looking ahead” in this space, and we’re downright giddy to bring it back, even if just for this week. In an effort to help save our local stages, the team from Burly Beverages Backyard BBQ and Artists of Sac just dropped a lineup for ShelterFest in October, with an all-star streaming lineup featuring the Philharmonik, Drop Dead Red, the Gold Souls, Autumn Sky Hall, Vinnie Guidera, Shaun Slaughter and tons more. $20. www.facebook.com; www.shelterfest2020.com (site goes live August 26).
