January arts roundup: Tool, Monster Jam, Crocker showings and live theater in Sacramento

This January features a number of diverse entertainment options for people in the Sacramento area. From galleries to plays to comedians, there is something for everyone to beat the January blues. These are just some of the option.

In January, the Crocker Art Museum will be offering a variety of tours. Check the schedule for tours led in Spanish, French, Cantonese, and American Sign Language. There will also be tours focused on history, architecture, recently lost artists, impressionism, kids and tours that are intentionally slower. For more information, see crockerart.org.

January 7-9, Sacramento Theatre Company presents “The Marvel of the Movies.” This performance is by the YPC students. For more information and tickets go to sactheatre.org.

January, scheduled to open later this month, the Manetti Shrem Museum debuts three exhibitions. The first is “From Moment to Movement: Picturing Protest in the Kramlich Collection,” curated by Susie Kantor. This exhibit will run through June 19. The second is “Mary Heilmann: Squaring Davis,” which was curated by Dan Nadel. This exhibit will have a special opening and artist conversation on January 30, and will be on view through May. The last exhibit opening is “William T. Wiley and the Slant Step: All on the Line.” Curated by Dan Nadel, this exhibit will run through May 7. January 9, the Crocker hosts Classical Concerts featuring Isaac Pastor-Chermak on cello and Alison Lee on piano. For more information, see crockerart.org.

January 11-February 20, the B Street Theatre presents “Broke-ology,” by Nathan Louis Jackson. This play is best for ages 13 and up, and focuses on the King family as they navigate a crossroads with love, sibling rivalry and humor. For more information, see bstreettheatre.org.

January 13, the Crocker will host a guest lecture featuring Meghan Jones on contemporary Japanese ceramics via YouTube. For more information, see crockerart.org.

January 13-16, Sacramento Theatre Company presents “Once Upon a Mattress,” starring students from their PEC program. This performance is a youth edition for ages 4 and up. For more information and tickets, go to sactheatre.org.
