Sacramento weekend guide: Play cornhole for veterans, join a yoga class or visit a book fair
Spring has finally sprung, and Sacramentans can take advantage of the outdoors during the final week of the month.
Temperatures on Saturday range from 48 to 81 degrees for a partly sunny day, while Sunday is slightly cooler with a high of 73 and cloudy skies.
Consider sprinkling some of these events into your plans this weekend for an opportunity to relax and socialize in the midst of spring cleaning and other chores you may have on your plate.
From an indoor craft festival to an outdoor cornhole tournament, there are a variety of events taking place here this weekend March 25-27:
Friday
Take arts and crafts lessons
1600 Exposition Blvd, Sacramento
Looking for inspiration for your next creative art project? The Rusty Barn Promotion Group’s quilt, craft and sewing festival is this weekend, and attendees can learn about a variety of crafts including bag embroidery, zipper making and fiber art from local vendors.
The fair opens Thursday, March 24, running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cal Expo. The fair continues Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets, available online for $10 in advance, are $12 at the door for the three-day festival.
Catch an improv show
1050 20th St. #130, Sacramento
The Sacramento Comedy Spot is holding a musical improvisation show this weekend with the group “Love Song.” The improv group, which heavily relies on audience participation, makes up scenes based on the songs they perform.
Tickets are $5 plus fees online through SimpleTix.
Saturday
Play cornhole to raise money for homeless people and veterans
1515 Q St., Sacramento
Veterans organization Nation’s Finest is celebrating its 50th anniversary by holding the “Game of Throws” cornhole tournament this Saturday. The goal of this event, which takes place in four different states, is to raise $150,000 for homeless people and disabled veterans.
The family fundraiser, which starts at noon and lasts until 5 p.m. at Fremont Park, will feature a kid zone, raffle, photo booth, food trucks and a beer and wine garden.
Register in teams of two online for $60. Donations can also be made directly on the Nation’s Finest website.
Scrounge for collectibles at the antiquarian book fair
6151 H St., Sacramento
The Sacramento Antiquarian Book Fair is back in town this Saturday at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center from 9:45 a.m to 5 p.m. More than 60 local and state exhibitors will be selling their antique and collectible books, maps, photos and postcards.
Not everything at the fair, however, is necessarily old: popular items include cookbooks, children’s books and history books related to the Gold Rush. Admission is $5.
Sunday
Indulge in self-care Sunday
1007 7th St., Sacramento
Looking for ways to avoid the Sunday scaries? Relax your mind and body by practicing Kemetic yoga led by CEO of Afro Yoga, Angie Franklin, during Hella Wellthy’s self-care party entitled “Selfish Sunday.”
The event at the the Urban Hive also will feature a journal workshop and “wellness circle” for those interested in discussing and improving their mental and physical health.
Tickets are $30, and drinks and snacks will be provided. You can register online — the first 25 guests will receive a free bag upon entry.
Shop women-owned businesses
1107 Firehouse Alley, Sacramento
March is Women’s History Month, and Our Place Event is holding a “Women in Business” pop-up shop to support women entrepreneurs and vendors Sunday afternoon.
The small businesses, all operated by women, will be selling products ranging from sweets and desserts to flowers and fragrances.
Tickets are being sold for $10 and include one drink ticket and wine cup.
