Sacramento Zoo welcomes new babies — a lemur and flamingo — over Fourth of July weekend
There are back-to-back birthdays at the Sacramento Zoo as two baby animals were just introduced to the world.
On July 3, a new mongoose lemur was born, and a day later a flamingo chick hatched, the zoo shared on its social media.
The lemur was born to parents Dahlia and Elmo. It is most likely a male, although its sex remains in question. The pup currently lives with its parents in an indoor/outdoor habitat at the Small Wonders exhibit.
Mongoose Lemurs are a critically endangered species, with between 1,000 to 10,000 left in the wild.
The flamingo is the fifth chick hatched by its parents, as flamingos usually pair with the same partner every year.
“The chick is currently spending days with its parents out on the lake learning how to be a flamingo, but being brought inside at night to protect the chick from potential predation from native wildlife while it is still so tiny,” the zoo wrote in a Facebook post.
The zoo says that the new addition to the flamboyance is healthy and well.
