Sacramento Labor Day weekend events: Holiday picnic, Chalk it Up, free fishing, $3 movies
It’s a hot start to September, and while Sacramento County is urging residents to stay in doors, there are plenty of activities planned in and out of the air conditioning.
The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the capital region Saturday, with temperatures expected to reach upwards of 110 degrees. The agency advises people drink plenty of water and to limit outdoors activities.
Here’s what activities are in store this weekend of Sept. 2 to 5.
Friday
Watch an iconic hip-hop artist perform downtown
1116 15th St, Sacramento
Rapper Lil Jon is performing at the downtown nightclub, Park Ultra Lounge, Friday. The artist and producer emerged in the 2000s crunk music scene with his rap group, “Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz,” — known for hits “Get Low” and “Play No Games.”
General admission tickets are going for $25 online. VIP tickets are also available, and those interested in booking a table should call 916-802-3036. You must be 21 years or older to attend.
Have a few late-night laughs with comedian Anthony K
Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club and Lounge: 1207 Front St, Sacramento
Comedian Anthony K is holding a few shows in Sacramento this weekend, and the first performance is Friday at 8 p.m. The stand-up performer has been featured in various regional comedy festivals including SF Sketchfest and Comedy Central’s Clusterfest.
The event is restricted to people 17 years of age and older, and tickets are available online for $25.
Saturday
See vintage cars at this inaugural festival
1014 2nd St #200, Sacramento
The city is holding its first-ever annual Festival de Bombas at the Old Sacramento Waterfront this weekend for families to view classic, vintage cars, known as “Bombas.” The festival begins at noon and will feature DJ’s, live music and street vendors.
The event is free and is meant for families and people of all ages. Funds raised by the sponsors of the festival will go to Front Street Animal Shelter and student scholarships.
Catch a movie for $3 at the drive-in
Century DoCo: 1015 4th St, Sacramento
National Cinema Day falls this Saturday, and several theaters in the capital region are showing select movies for $3. Participating theaters include Cinemark Century DoCo and XD, Century Arden 14 and XD and West Wind Sacramento 6 Drive-In.
For a full list of participating movie theaters and showtimes, you can check the National Cinema Day website. Some movies playing Saturday are “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s new sci-fi horror film “Nope.”
Go fishing (for free)
Hagan Community Park: 2197 Chase Dr, Rancho Cordova
California’s second free fishing day of 2022 is Sept. 3, and the state’s fish and wildlife department is encouraging people to learn fishing technique and skills for free at clinics in the Sacramento area. On Saturday, people over the age of 17 can fish without having to buy a sport fishing license.
In-person classes will be held at the Hagan Community Park in Rancho Cordova — meant for people of all ages, including children at least 5 years old. Registration is available for the Saturday clinic online.
Sunday
Embark on a scenic train ride
Central Pacific Passenger Station: 930 Front St, Sacramento
The California State Railroad Museum is inviting passengers aboard its historic Sacramento Southern Railroad. The scenic train ride journeys along the Sacramento River and lasts for 50 minutes.
Tickets can be purchased at the Central Pacific Passenger Station or online, starting at $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to 17 in coach.
Attend an LGBTQ block party
2000 K St., Sacramento
The annual Sacramento Rainbow Festival is in midtown Sunday, and is a fundraising event that invites members of the LGBTQ community.
The block party, held in the Lavender Heights neighborhood, features live music, DJ’s and other performances. Information on tickets and pricing is available on the festival’s Facebook page. The event takes place from 4 to 11 p.m.
Monday — Labor Day
Chalk it up at this midtown art festival
1515 Q St, Sacramento
The 32nd annual Chalk it Up! Chalk Art and Music Festival is a three-day celebration taking place Labor Day weekend, starting Saturday. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at Fremont Park.
The festival invites local artists to fill up the sidewalk with chalk art and features music, craft and food vendors for the community. The event is free and family friendly.
Bring your lawn chairs out for a Labor Day picnic
3901 Land Park Dr, Sacramento
The Sacramento Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO is hosting a Labor Day picnic at Fairytale Town after hours for local union members and their families.
The picnic will feature a barbecue dinner, a beer garden and live music, and is free for union families. Registration is available on the event’s website.
