Legendary British rock back The Who lit up the stage at Golden 1 Center Wednesday night on the fall leg of their North American tour, “The Who Hits Back!”
In their sixth decade performing together, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend electrified the crowd with age-defying energy, performing some of their biggest hits as well as some new songs. The two powerhouses were backed by singer Simon Townshend, Pete Townshend’s brother, keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button, drummer Zak Starkey, backup singer Billy Nicholls and an orchestra.
Former lead guitarist and songwriter for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, fronted the show with his band the Dirty Knobs. The Wild Things will open for the tour’s final two shows in Las Vegas on Nov. 4 and 5.
Daltrey seemed to think they had never played in Sacramento, but Townshend assured him they had. They performed in 2000 at the Sacramento Valley Amphitheater.
Fans couldn’t be contained in their seats as Jacoby jammed with Townshend on “Baba O’Riley” as they closed out the night.
