These trains offer an immersive holiday experience in Northern California. What to know

Trains around Northern California are spreading holiday cheer this season with themed rides.

This annual activity is popular in the capital region, led by the Polar Express, which is hosted by the California State Railroad Museum Foundation. The Polar Express — which departs from Old Sacramento and features Santa, as well as chefs serving hot chocolate and treats — is sold out for the 2022 season. Ticket sales began in October for the general public, so if you want to enjoy the ride next year, stay tuned for ticket information in the fall.

Other trains in the region are offering similar family-friendly excursions. Here’s what to know:

River Fox Train

Departs at 18095 County Road 117, West Sacramento

The River Fox Train in West Sacramento is hosting the Holiday Spirit Express, which is billed as an “adult-friendly Christmas experience.” On the ride, you’ll find Santa, his elves, snacks and alcoholic drinks. If you purchase a first-class ticket, you can enjoy a strolling musician, charcuterie arrangement and specialty desserts in the vintage dining carts.

First-class tickets: $149 per seat

Standard tickets: $99 per seat

For a kid-friendly experience, River Fox offers a Magical Christmas Train where riders can meet Santa and sing along with elves on an hourlong ride.

Teens and adults: $55 per seat

Children 3 to 12: $45 per seat

Infants and toddlers: $10

Western Pacific Railroad Museum

Departs at 700 Western Pacific Way, Portola

Santa Trains at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola returns this December. Running Friday and Saturday evenings, a train, covered in festive lights, will treat passengers to a ride with free homemade cookies, hot cider, coffee and hot chocolate.

According to the museum website, train rides start at 5 p.m. and will continue until everyone gets a turn.

Tickets: $10 per carload, or $5 if you bring three cans of non-perishable food

Roaring Camp

Departs at 400 Beach St., Santa Cruz

The Roaring Camp in Santa Cruz has Holiday Lights Train, giving passengers a ride to the past with its Victorian-style Christmas theme. There will be hot apple cider, carols and Santa.

First-class tickets: $59.95 for adults, $45.95 for kids 2 to 12

Standard-class tickets: $44.95 for adults, $32.95 for kids

Niles Canyon Railway

Departs at 37029 Mission Blvd., Fremont, or 6 Kilkare Road, Sunol

Tickets for the Train of Lights at Niles Canyon Railway are sold out, but according to its website, tickets may become available due to cancellations.

The Train of Lights is a 1½-hour-long ride through the Niles Canyon. It features holiday lights and decoration, refreshments and music.

First-class tickets: $65

General tickets: $35
