New entertainment venue is under construction in Sacramento. What’s next for music scene?

Sacramento’s buzzy music scene is getting a new live entertainment venue.

Another Planet Entertainment, an independent concert promoter and production company, announced March 20 that it’s building a new music venue in midtown Sacramento, called Channel 24.

Channel 24 is currently under construction at 1800 24th St., according to Wednesday’s news release.

The concert venue is expected to open early 2025.

Why open a new entertainment venue in Sacramento?

Created in 2003, Another Planet Entertainment presents a variety of music shows and festivals in the United States, including Outside Lands in San Francisco and Life Is Beautiful in Las Vegas.

“Our company primarily focuses on Northern California,” Allen Scott, president of concerts and festivals at Another Planet Entertainment, told The Sacramento Bee on Wednesday. “That’s our home. And it’s been important for us to help add to the music and cultural landscape of the areas we work in.”

The company has been producing concerts in the Sacramento area since its inception, Scott said, at venues ranging from Golden 1 Center and Sacramento Memorial Auditorium to Raley Field — now called Sutter Health Park — and the now-demolished Arco Arena.

Shows there and at other nearby venues featured artists including Arctic Monkeys, Twenty One Pilots, MGMT, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Mötley Crüe.

Scott said many artists who are touring in Northern California — and making stops at the Fox Theater in Oakland or Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco — tend to skip Sacramento because of its lack of live music venues.

“We know that artists want to play Sacramento, if they could find the right room,” Scott said.

Channel 24 will be a mid-size venue, holding up to 2,150 people., according to the release.

“This is kind of a sweet spot for Sacramento,” he said.

Scott added that Sacramento residents often drive out to Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco to see performers that don’t stop in the capital city.

“Hopefully, those people won’t have to drive anymore and the people who live in the area will be able to easily get to see their favorite artists,” he said.

What’s in store for Channel 24?

Channel 24 will feature a music room with a floor for general admission, according to Wednesday’s release.

There will also be reserved seats at its tiered balcony, a VIP area, an open-air patio and multiple bars.

Scott said the venue will offer a variety of shows ranging from classic rock and country music to R&B, hip hop and pop.

“You name it, we want to book it,” he said.

To get a snapshot of the types of concerts that Channel 24 might present, Scott suggested looking at the Fox Theater’s calendar.

The Oakland venue’s upcoming shows for 2024 include Two Door Cinema Club, Hippie Sabotage, Luke Hemmings and Goth Babe.

Will there be parking?

Plans for parking and transportation are still in the works.

“We have been working with the city’s planning and transportation departments on Channel 24’s event transportation plan, which will outline available parking lots, ride-share drop-off locations, and event logistics,” said Jon Gunton of Another Planet Entertainment.

According to the release, Gunton and Liz Liles-Brown will be leading the venue.

Guests of Channel 24 will have access to private and public parking lots nearby, as well as on-street parking, Gunton said.

“At the forefront of this plan is a concerted effort to minimize the venue’s impact on existing residents,” Gunton said.

When will new concert venue open?

According to Scott, Channel 24 has been in the works for more than 10 years, as Another Planet Entertainment searched for a building of the ideal size.

Construction on the venue started in the fall.

Scott said Channel 24 is expected to open sometime between January and March 2025.

“We’re excited to ... get the word out, not just to Sacramento but to the industry as well,” he said, “so that bands can start planning for next year to come through Sacramento.”
