As they lounged Saturday night on overstuffed creme couches in the VIP section on the floor of Golden 1 Center, front-row fans of Mary J. Blige were in for a surprise.
Moments later, the “queen of hip-hop soul” made her entrance into the arena on a small rear stage in the center of the section, and the shortest night of the year was about to get shorter.
After greeting fans and singing her opening songs, Blige glided over the G1C floor on a tiara-like platform suspended from the ceiling. She arrived on a main stage framed by two colossal arms holding an MJB crown.
It was the last California stop for Blige’s “The For My Fans Tour,” a 27-date trip that started in January. The Grammy and Emmy award-wining artist heads next to St. Louis, and concludes her U.S. shows in Miami on April 27.
The tour follows Blige’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the 2024 class on Oct. 19 and the Nov. 15 release of her latest album “Gratitude.”
The night’s opening acts were special guests Ne-Yo and Mario.
