Get ready! DiCaprio movie filmed in Sacramento set to open in theaters

The Leonardo DiCaprio movie “One Battle After Another” that was filmed in Sacramento and in other spots across Northern California is opening in theaters this month.

With a release date set for Sept. 26, the big action film also stars Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor.

The film was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The plot centers around a former revolutionary who must reunite with old associates to find his missing daughter.

Warner Bros. Pictures shot scenes inside La Superior Market on Northgate Boulevard, at the Railyards and downtown at the corner of I and Sixth streets across the Kimpton Sawyer Hotel, according to the city and previous Bee reporting.

Scenes from the film were also shot across Humboldt County, including in Eureka, Arcata, Trinidad and Cutten. Production in the region, filmed under the working title “BC Project,” drew attention from local residents and extras casting calls shared by the Humboldt-Del Norte Film Commission, according to the Lost Coast Outpost.

Additional scenes were captured in Stockton, Galt, San Juan Bautista and Los Angeles. In May 2024, cast and crew filmed high-intensity action sequences in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, according to SF Gate. Onlookers spotted Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn filming near the Montezuma Grade, a steep desert highway known for panoramic views. Park officials at the time confirmed to SF Gate that a multi-day filming permit involving staged car crashes and road closures was issued.

The film’s production continued into June with a brief shoot in El Paso, Texas. Staff at a local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store reported Warner Bros. crew purchasing vintage furnishings for use as set dressing. Social media posts also captured DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro in downtown El Paso, according to the El Paso Times.

The movie also stars Chase Infiniti.

“One Battle After Another” is Anderson’s most expensive project to date as writer and director, with an estimated filming budget of at least $130 million, according to Variety.

The 2-hour, 50-minute film will be released in IMAX and standard formats nationwide on Sept. 26.
