Frankie Muniz Brought His Son to the ‘Malcolm’ Reboot Premiere and We’re Not OK

If you grew up watching Frankie Muniz break the fourth wall as the genius middle child on Malcolm in the Middle, brace yourself: He’s 40 now, he has a 5-year-old son and that kid just stole the entire red carpet at the show’s reboot premiere. Feel old yet?

Muniz walked the red carpet on Tuesday, April 7 in New York City alongside wife Paige Price and son Mauz for the premiere of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, which premieres April 10 on Hulu and Disney+. And while the original cast reunion was enough to send nostalgia levels through the roof, it was little Mauz who went viral — rocking a red velvet tux, playing with his bowtie and smiling adorably during his own solo moment in front of the cameras, very clearly loving the attention.

Like father, like son.

A ‘Really Cool Moment’ for the Whole Muniz Family

Muniz, who returns as Malcolm in the reboot, later told People Magazine that having Mauz Mosley alongside him at the premiere was a “really cool moment.”

“I don’t know if it’s weird to show your kid stuff that you did, but obviously I’m proud of it,” Muniz, 40, says of his iconic television show. “But I love that he got to experience being a part of it.”

“I’ll always have the photos of my family in front of some Malcolm in the Middle stuff because they weren’t obviously around when the show was on 20 years ago,” he continues. “So, [it’s a] really, really cool moment.”

For anyone who remembers watching the original show — which premiered more than 20 years ago — hearing Muniz talk about his family not being around for the first run is one of those “time flies” gut punches. The kid who played Malcolm is now a dad trying to make his own kid proud. That’s a full-circle moment that hits different when you’re also navigating adulthood and wondering where the years went.

How Fatherhood Changed Frankie Muniz’ Perspective

Muniz opened up about how being a parent has taught him “perspective” — and his honesty about it feels refreshingly real.

“I know it kind of sounds cliché to say, but what you think is important in life, the things that you really focus on, to me, until you have a kid … so many people say that. ‘You have no idea.’ Even being on set and my son being there, I want to make him proud,” he shares.

“I’m doing it for a show, I’m doing it for the producers, I’m doing it for the other actors — but I’m doing it for him,” continues the proud dad. “This is a weird kind of perspective that I have on everything. I love having him here.”

The ‘Malcom In the Middle’ Cast Is Back Together

Almost all of the original cast is back for the reboot, and Muniz couldn’t sound more excited about it.

“I love it. I could play Malcolm forever. You know what I mean? A lot of actors are like ‘oh I don’t want to do this anymore,’ this was awesome,” Muniz told ABC7. “Everyone loves the show.”

Bryan Cranston, who plays Malcolm’s dad in the show, also spoke at the premiere about what makes the series special — and his words carry the kind of warmth that fans of the original will appreciate.

“There is intrinsic value in pure laughter,” Cranston told ABC7. “Joy and laughter can actually make your day better. Maybe make your week better. It’s not a panacea. It doesn’t solve problems, but it does lift you up to take another step and another day.”
