Valheim 1.0 Release Update Finally Reveals What Lies At The Deep North

The treacherous path towards the frigid Arctic finally offers passage in Valheim's 1.0 Deep North update, marking its exit from a 5-year tenure in early access. Iron Gate, the developers of this Norse myth-inspired survival crafting game, has confirmed that the launch will take place on the 9th of September this year.

Deep North will be available on several gaming platforms (with cross play), including PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One/Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and even on the Nintendo Switch 2.

What Lies At The Deep North

The long-awaited Deep North update looks packed with various new content, including new monsters, structures, and game mechanics. While Iron Gate has yet to reveal all the details, including comprehensive patch notes, the trailer visuals give us an idea of what to expect once our voyage reaches the far north.

Similar to how players would encounter tall volcanic spires as they approach the Ashlands, the Deep North coastlines are hedged by small yet solid icebergs, which your ship must navigate around in order to land safely and close to the shore. Within the snowy biome lie several types of environments, ranging from vast open plains of snow to thick tundra forests and elaborate castles made of marble and stone.

The Long Wait

Despite being a highly rated and well-loved game in the indie survival-crafting genre, Valheim's major updates have been historically glacial in terms of pace. The game was initially released in early access on February 2, 2021, followed by the Mistlands expansion on December 6, 2022, and finally, the Ashlands expansion on May 14, 2024.

The slow development cycle has been attributed to the laid-back culture that the developers have maintained since the initial launch. In a dev interview with Automaton, lead engineer Jonathan Smårs stated that Iron Gate has only 16 employees, of whom only 8 are dedicated to game development. He also mentioned a focus on ‘work-life balance' and strong camaraderie among fellow developers.

Valheim is currently available on several platforms, including Steam for PC and Linux, App Store for macOS, and the Microsoft Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions will be released on September 9, on the same day as Valheim 1.0's launch.
