‘The Odyssey’ will be screened in 70mm IMAX in Sacramento. Where and when?
Christopher Nolan’s newest mammoth IMAX film opens today, and Sacramento is home to one of only a handful of theaters nationwide that can screen the film in its intended format.
“The Odyssey,” a nearly three-hour retelling of the ancient Greek epic poem featuring a star-studded cast, officially releases Friday, but theaters across the Sacramento region are screening the film early on Thursday, both in IMAX and digital formats.
Only 40 screens across the globe — including just 25 in the U.S. — are capable of showing “The Odyssey” in its original film format, and Sacramento is home to one of those cinemas.
Here’s where you can watch Nolan’s brand-new film around Sacramento, both in its 70mm IMAX film format and in more common digital formats.
Where can I see “The Odyssey” in IMAX in Sacramento
Only eight movie theaters in California have the equipment required to project the large, proprietary 70mm IMAX film reels, and Esquire IMAX Theater in downtown Sacramento is the only one outside the Bay Area and the Los Angeles metro.
Not only do viewers get the chance to watch the first full feature-length movie entirely filmed in IMAX’s large 70mm format, but also the unique IMAX 70mm film has a nearly square aspect ratio, at 1.23:1, offering a more vertical viewing experience than most modern movies.
Esquire IMAX Theater scheduled three screenings of “The Odyssey” on Thursday, and all were sold out hours ahead of time. Three of Friday’s four screenings still had tickets available as of Thursday morning, but seats were already limited.
General admission seating for the movie at Esquire costs $25.
The 70mm cinema has four daily showtimes for the Nolan film through Sunday, July 26, and it will then drop to three screenings daily for at least three more weeks, according to IMAX’s website.
Other Sacramento-area theaters offer IMAX digital screenings, which feature larger screens than traditional theaters, though not as expansive as the 70mm format’s 1.23:1 aspect ratio.
Three cinemas in the capital region are showing “The Odyssey” in IMAX’s digital format:
- Regal Delta Shores & IMAX, 8136 Delta Shores Circle South, Sacramento
- CinemaWest Roseville & IMAX, 520 North Sunrise Ave., Roseville
- Regal El Dorado Hills & IMAX, 2101 Vine St., El Dorado Hills
Those theaters are also offering early screenings on Thursday, from 3:05 p.m. to 10:55 p.m., according to the IMAX website. As of Friday, showtimes expand to four or five offerings daily.
