Are these the nation’s best plates of fried chicken?

Fried chicken is more popular than ever around Sacramento and, for that matter, the nation. The all-food-and-drink all-the-time editors at the Daily Meal have put together their annual list of America’s 50 Best Fried Chicken Spots, including four in California.

They explain how: “In (our) ranking ... we considered the taste and quality of the fried chicken (as reported by customer reviews, critics and firsthand knowledge), any awards or accolades the venue has received, any awards or accolades the dish itself has received, the décor and atmosphere, and the price for the meal as well as the overall ratings by diners across the United States.”

No. 1 is Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken in Mason and Memphis, Tenn., but California restaurants have a showing. Among them are Ad Hoc in Yountville (No. 20) and New Golden Daisy in San Francisco (No. 38).

The Daily Meal writes about Ad Hoc: “The process seems simple enough: an unbeatable brine, add on some buttermilk and give it a flavor-filled coating, but it’s the chef’s golden touches that keeps diners coming back for more.”

About New Golden Daisy, the editors write: “This Chinese restaurant has managed to adapt the old classic into something newly delicious. The skin is perfectly crispy with hints of ginger, garlic, and scallion, and the meat is tender and moist.”

Other California winners are Son of a Gun (No. 4) and Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles (No. 46), both in Los Angeles.
