Sacramento Classic Jazz Messengers drive the hard-bop machine
The drummer Art Blakey was as great a band leader and talent scout as he was a master musician. Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard were just a few of the most influential of Blakey’s legendary Jazz Messengers.
With always sizzling front lines – and Blakey providing the push they are a worthy band to emulate. The Sacramento Classic Jazz Messengers sextet give the hard bop machine a run this Friday at Shine.
The group is led by Chet Chwalik on trumpet. He’ll have on the bandstand Darius Babazadeh, saxophone; Al Bent, trombone; Brenden Lowe, piano; and Kerry Kashiwagi, bass. The no-nonsense veteran drummer Mat Marucci handles Blakey’s drum chair.
8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Shine (1400 E St., Sacramento). All ages. Tickets: $10. Information at Shine or 916-551-1400.
