‘Get excited ... and be inspired’: Sacramento arts studio’s summer camp moving online
E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts is taking its annual summer camp digital, as registration has reopened with accommodations for California’s stay-at-home and social distancing orders during the coronavirus pandemic.
The virtual classes will be delivered over two-week sessions in June and July for students between the ages of 10 to 18, with tutelage from performers and instructors in the fields of opera, acting, dance and choreography, among others. The program is open to all school districts, with a cap of 50 students per session.
“When we realized our normal camp couldn’t safely happen this year, we explored how the benefits of traditional camp — community, skills-sharing, opportunities for kids to challenge themselves as artists — could translate to a virtual framework,” Emily Danz, education and outreach director, said in a statement. “We are excited and proud to offer it, and think your kids will love it.”
Daily activities go from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include morning Zoom community circles and warmups, small-group sharing and opportunities for attendees to display what they have learned. Each day also brings a 90-minute masterclass and Q&A session, with experts from various backgrounds.
G Madison IV, a lead dancer from Los Angeles, will share insights he has gained performing alongside the likes of Mariah Carey and Lady Gaga, while Hannah Goodman from the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York City will offer instruction for young singers.
“The cool part is, that this summer, I will be your hip-hop teacher. Virtually, that is. So get excited, stay healthy and be inspired,” Madison said in a video message to potential pupils.
Full and partial scholarships are available for families who need financial assistance.
