Sacramento’s music and arts scene was thriving.

Thousands of us packed Cesar Chavez Plaza for concerts. Mural festivals decorated the walls of neighborhoods from downtown to Power Inn Road. Golden 1 Center, Ace of Spades and dozens of other venues were alive.

Those days will return, once the coronavirus crisis fades. But in the meantime, our region’s music and arts scene needs our help.

Beginning this weekend, The Sacramento Bee is launching a series of concerts and live art creation. We’re calling the series “Band Together.”

Bands and artists will perform live on our Facebook page. They’ll perform from their homes and will practice safe physical distancing.

All we ask is that you watch and, if you can, support these artists by buying their music and artwork, or by sending them donations. We’ll include links to their websites or GoFundMe accounts on our Facebook page and during the shows.

We’ll start the series at 7 p.m. Saturday, with a concert in collaboration with Old Ironsides, the great old bar and music venue in downtown Sacramento.

Performing live on our Facebook will be local bands Bird Control, the Cassette Idols and the Mean Muggers. RSVP to the free concert here.

That will be followed in the weeks ahead by more shows, curated and hosted by local music venues and collectives. We’ll feature local artists and craft makers, too.

Are you a musician or artist whose livelihood has been upended by this crisis? Drop me a line and we’ll talk about getting you a show.

In the meantime, let’s take some time to celebrate our region’s amazing art and music scene. And then do our part to make sure it’s just as vibrant when life returns to normal.
