Postcards From Readers: Communication dictation

The photographer: Shari Shively of Folsom

Behind the lens: At a stop on a bus trip from Cuzco to Puno (by Lake Titicaca in Peru), I happened upon this scene. Electricity is scarce and Wi-Fi unheard of through the La Raya Pass on the desolate Peruvian pampa. These people are dictating letters to typists on manual typewriters to send to their family members who are working in the U.S. or other places to support their families. It made me cherish both my own literacy and our ability to communicate almost instantly with those in other parts of the world.
