Escapes: Oakland Zoo cranks up the lights, music
The award-winning Oakland Zoo has become a display of lights and music through Jan. 3. Animal-themed lighting structures, holiday attractions and a nightly light and music performance anchors the family-friendly Zoolights event.
Adult admission is $8, while children enter for $7; zoo members receive a $1 discount. The zoo will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Parade of Lights in Gold Country
What: The Gold Rush-era buildings in Sutter Creek will be decorated in holiday twinkling lights as floats, horses, school buses and baton twirlers make their way down Main Street. Bubbles will take the place of snowflakes.

Big Rig Parade
What: Lighted and decorated big rigs will make their way through the streets of Eureka in the annual Truckers Christmas Parade. There’ll be 18-wheelers stretching as long as 60 feet dressed up as parade floats, sporting dancing reindeer, bandstands and up to 40,000 lights.

Peter Pan
What: Catch the Berkeley Playhouse’s rendition of the children’s classic “Peter Pan” before in its final performances. The show runs two hours with a 15 minute intermission. Tickets can be purchased online.

Holiday Stroll
What: The annual Yuba City Holiday Stroll will feature hay bale rides, shopping, live entertainment, holiday food and a children’s play area in downtown Yuba City.

Northern Lights Festival
What: The second annual Northern Lights Festival will celebrate winter with a day of family fun including day and evening activities on the mountain. Each night will conclude with a dazzling display of fireworks, alongside live and DJ music.
