Escapes: Chico’s Snow Goose Festival

Gaze upon thousands of local and migratory snow geese at the 17th annual Snow Goose Festival, a five-day event of field trips, workshops and birdwatching tours.

The festival will begin Wednesday, Jan. 27, and run through Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Masonic Family Center. Activities for the whole family will be offered, including an “All About Bats” presentation, “Wetlands’ Wildlife” film and a finale banquet featuring a keynote address by nature photographer George Lepp.

Admission is free. However, attendees must preregister online for field trips and other events. Tickets for the festival’s finale banquet range from $5 to $150.

Winter Storytelling Festival

 

What: The Winter Storytelling Festival, hosted by Placer County’s Foothill Storytelling Guild, promises a full day of fun for storytellers and story lovers alike. The event will include storytellers workshops, an open microphone and a lying contest – which offers a trophy to the best liar at the showdown.

Restaurant Week

 

What: Restaurants throughout downtown Berkeley will participate in a weeklong celebration of food and drink, featuring specialty menus and discounts. The event will include a spread of cuisines and cultures, featuring restaurants serving Japanese, American, German and Greek fare.

When: Sunday, Jan. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 31

Rose Cutting and Brunch

 

What: The Spanish Mission San Antonio de Padua will host its annual Cutting of the Roses ceremony in the Padre’s Garden, followed by a festive brunch. The event will also feature crafts, face painting and a gift shop to celebrate the tradition.

Brew HaHa Beer Event

 

What: The event features more than 20 microbreweries and 100 beer types to sample. Live entertainment on the Nugget Casino Rose Ballroom stage will accompany craft beer tasting. Attendees must be 21 or older.

The Beach Boys

 

What: The longtime pop group the Beach Boys will play a lineup of hits at the Uptown Theatre Napa. Attendees must be 12 or older; individuals younger than 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
