Can you guess the 50 most common Italian names for babies in Italy?
Most of us know that the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) records and maintains baby name data throughout the country, and releases an annual list of the most popular baby names that year.
That list contains names from all different walks of life, including common Italian names like Luca, which was the 24th most popular boy name in 2023, and Gianna, which was the 21st most popular girl name.
Other common Italian names used in the U.S. include Aurora (22nd, girl), Roman (66th, boy), Leonardo (84th, boy), Gabriella (89th, girl), Enzo (90, boy), Bella (106th, girl), and Giovanni (123rd, boy).
But what if we were to take a break from the names we see so often in American classrooms? What if we were to take a trip overseas to see what common Italian names are being used by parents across Italy?
Well, you’re in luck. Thanks to the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat), we have all the information we need because, like the SSA, they release a list of the most common Italian names in Italy that year.
In fact, they have nearly 25 years of baby name data for you to sift through, dating back to 1999. With that said, let’s take a look at last year’s data, for 2023, and see what names Italian parents prefer right now.
Most common Italian names for girls
Believe it or not, the most common Italian names for girls haven’t changed much since 1999, when Istat started recording baby name data. A majority of those that were at the top of the list are still at the top.
