Today's Craig Melvin Promises He Is 'Safe and Sound' After Intruder Incident

Craig Melvingave an update on his well-being after an incident with an intruder on the Today show set.

"I want to take a quick minute to address an incident that happened yesterday," Melvin, 47, said during the Friday, July 17, episode of the NBC morning show while sitting with Carson Daly, Laura Jarrett and Al Roker.

"You may have heard that unfortunately an intruder made his way into an unauthorized area here at Studio 1A," he continued. "Thankfully he was apprehended quickly [and] he was placed under arrest."

Melvin added: "We are cooperating fully with the NYPD as they investigate the matter and we are just very happy that everyone is safe."

Jarrett, 42, noted that Melvin's safety was the most important thing, and he assured his colleagues - as well as viewers at home - that he is "safe and sound."

News broke on Thursday, July 16, that a person - later identified as 41-year-old Andrew Truelove - was arrested after walking onto the New York City set.

Truelove reportedly asked for Roker, 71, before confronting Melvin instead. The intruder allegedly lunged at Melvin and yelled a racial slur.

The incident took place after Melvin cohosted the first and third hours of the Today show with Roker, Savannah Guthrie and Dylan Dreyer. It was not caught on camera.

"There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio. An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A," read a statement from Today show on Thursday. "The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security. The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident. There was no altercation, and no one was injured."

The statement continued, "TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter. NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios."

Melvin broke his silence about the incident later that same day.

"Hey everyone. I've heard from so many of you over the last few hours. I'm doing just fine," he wrote via Instagram. "Thanks for reaching out. I'm looking forward to seeing you tomorrow morning on @todayshow."

Multiple outlets reported that a security guard was fired after the intruder slipped through at the morning show studio. Truelove is facing several charges, including hate crime - criminal trespass and harassment, among others.
