Morant’s Old Fashioned Sausage Kitchen is closed indefinitely after a fire earlier this month, said Capt. Keith Wade, Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 2:36 a.m. on March 6, Wade said. A handwritten sign on the butcher shop at 5001 Franklin Blvd. confirmed the closure.

“Due to emergency reasons our store is closed,” the sign read. “We apologize for the inconvenience until further notice. Thank you.”

The fire did about $50,000 in damage to Morant’s, Wade said. It will have to be re-permitted by the City of Sacramento before reopening.

Founded in 1980 by father-son duo Ferdinand and Ed Morant, the shop made its name selling hard-to-find European sausages such as landjaeger, liverwurst and rindswurst. Dirk Muller, born in Peru to parents of German descent, bought Morant’s in 1989 and has been running it since.

Morant’s phone line was down and listed phone numbers for Muller were inaccurate.
