Let’s all scream for Gunther’s Ice Cream. Shortly after celebrating its own milestone birthday, the 75-year-old Sacramento institution received national recognition this week when it was named the “best place for ice cream” in California.

Business Insider put together a state-by-state list of the best people-pleasing ice cream shops nationwide, based on the mobile search app Foursquare and its users’ likes, saves, shares and more. Gunther’s, located at 2801 Franklin Blvd., earned raves for its wide range of seasonal flavors and fruit freezes.

This is what Business Insider wrote:

“Gunther’s Quality Ice Cream features a new specialty flavor every month, from eggnog in December to Bailey’s Irish Cream in March. The Sacramento shop is also known for its sorbet-like fruit freezes, a combination of icy fruit flavors in a huge cup.”

Gunther’s does a great job with the basics, too. It’s the two-time defending champion of The Bee’s annual ice cream taste-off, besting two other local institutions – Vic’s and Leatherby’s – in back-to-back summers. In the 2014 taste test, Gunther’s earned high marks for vanilla, strawberry and mint chip.

Owned by Rick and Marlena Klopp, the family-run ice cream shop still makes its product the old-fashioned way, churning out about 3,500 gallons a week during hot summer months. Part of Gunther’s appeal is the richness of its ice cream with 16 percent butterfat, similar to other super premium ice creams. Typical commercial ice cream contains 10 percent butterfat.
