Raising Cane’s chicken stops plan for this Sacramento location. Here’s why

An application for a new Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers in Natomas was withdrawn in May, according to the city’s planning division.

The reason for the sudden switch may be on the owners of the Natomas Marketplace, said city planning spokesman Jose Quintanilla, where Raising Cane’s planned to build its new location.

“It would have required Raising Cane’s to acquire additional property to the south and I believe because the other owners of the shopping center all need to be in agreement, I’m assuming that’s where that was a sticking point and it just couldn’t get the approval from the other owners,” he said.

Quintanilla said Raising Cane’s tried to find a solution that wouldn’t require additional land but it didn’t work out. Raising Cane’s spokesman Brandon Layman wasn’t immediately available for comment.

First submitted in August 2020, the initial proposal included the construction of a 3,194 square-foot drive-through restaurant with an outdoor covered patio. The plan included the deconstruction of the existing On The Border at 3521 Truxel Road, which is vacant, according to Sacramento Community Development Tracker.

But after not hearing from Raising Cane’s in a while, Quintanilla conducted a routine check-in where they told him they wouldn’t be able to “secure the additional property that they needed to do the traffic-related improvements,” like the city asked.

Quintanilla said the Natomas Marketplace has a reputation of being difficult to navigate in a vehicle, especially near its entrance because of “high traffic generators” including In-n-Out Burger at 3501 Truxel Rd. The city wanted to make sure Raising Cane’s wouldn’t add to the congestion.

“With Raising Cane’s being right next door, we wanted them to reconfigure the parking aisle next to the property to be able to funnel all that In-N-Out traffic and Raising Cane’s traffic away from the main drive aisle that serves the shopping center,” Quintanilla said.

The Natomas store would’ve been the Louisiana-based fast food chain’s fifth location in the Sacramento area along with one in Davis, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights and Roseville. Known for its chicken platters, Raising Cane’s limited menu includes chicken fingers, fries, coleslaw and Texas toast.
