A new downtown Sacramento restaurant and nightclub, Chelsea, will open in early August or late September, co-owner Sandra Yan-Crowell confirmed.

Yan-Crowell, her husband Hendrick Crowell and her brother Frank Yan also owned London, the club Chelsea will replace at 1009 10th St.

The name isn’t the only change. Chelsea will offer food in addition to drinks, a pan-Asian menu with specifics to be determined. It’ll just be open for dinner initially, but Yan-Crowell hopes to eventually sell lunches to nearby office workers.

Chelsea will then turn toward an evening bar program on weeknights, only going full nightclub on weekends. It’ll employee 30-40 people, most of them part-time.

London’s business plummeted after the deadliest shooting in Sacramento’s history took place outside its doors in April 2022. Some of the six victims had been partying at or sleeping outside London earlier in the night, and the club was tied to the shooting in many peoples’ minds, which Yan-Crowell said was an unfair association.

“It had nothing to do with us. Nothing had started in the club. There was no event in the club,” she said.

London remained open after the shooting until December, when the city of Sacramento denied the owners’ application to renew the club’s entertainment permit. The owners are appealing that decision, Yan-Crowell said, but are moving forward with the new concept in the meantime.
