Hawaii-themed restaurant closes abruptly in Sacramento. Chain still has one left in the area
Tropics Ale House Midtown in Sacramento has closed its doors, sending would-be customers away Thursday afternoon.
The tropical island-themed bar and restaurant on the corner of 21st and J streets originally planned to close at the end of August, according to an email sent out by DJ Trivia, an entertainment company that hosted games there twice a week.
It is unclear why the restaurant closed sooner than its initial projected date. An employee cleaning the closed-down location Thursday said she got word of the closure in a phone call.
Chris Perry, 30, of Davis, was turned away at the doors Thursday. He said he was very upset that Tropics was closed because he appreciated the community the establishment provided him when he would come in, roughly twice a week.
“I felt welcome here and known here,” Perry said. “They say your name when you walk in the door. You feel a part of something.”
The Tropics franchise also has locations in Camino, near Apple Hill in El Dorado County; as well as in Waikoloa, Kona and Waikiki in Hawaii. It was founded in Honolulu in 2005. Tropics had another Sacramento location, on K Street, that closed within the last year.
Kitchen staff said the best way to find out what will happen next with Tropics is to follow the business on Facebook and Instagram.
