Inside Look is a Sacramento Bee series where we take readers behind the scenes at restaurants, new businesses, local landmarks and news stories.

You may have seen that The Sacramento Bee held an event titled News & Nosh with chef Billy Ngo and writer Benjy Egel.

The exclusive event featured a discussion between Ngo, founder of Kru Contemporary Japanese Cuisine, Kodaiko Ramen & Bar and Fish Face Poke Bar, and Egel, who in 2023 published “Sacramento Eats: Recipes from the Capital Region’s Favorite Restaurants.” Ngo contributed two recipes to “Sacramento Eats” — Kru’s warm mushroom salad, a menu staple since the restaurant’s days in midtown, and a spicy-sweet Japanese curry that Kodaiko chef/partner Takumi Abe makes at home.

The sold-out event featured bites from Ngo’s three Sacramento-based restaurants and guests, including renowned chef, food writer and editor Ruth Reichl, who was in town for her talk the following evening with the Sacramento Speakers Series.

For those who attended and want more, and for those who wish they had attended, The Bee plans to host more events to celebrate the local food and drink scene. We are likely to feature other chefs who contributed to the 60 recipes that comprise “Sacramento Eats.”

There is much to celebrate about our local food and drink scene. For one, Ngo has been listed as Sacramento’s lone semifinalist for “Best Chef — California” this year. Finalists will be announced on Wednesday.
