Purr-fectly baked: this cat-themed cafe just opened in East Sacramento
A Thai-American owned bakery and cafe built around a cat theme has moved into East Sacramento.
Pastry Cat held its soft opening in late April, selling specialty cookies including salted Valrhona chocolate chip, miso brown butter and matcha yuzu almond, according to its website. The shop is on 533 53rd St.
You may have seen Pastry Cat’s baked goods in other cafes across Sacramento. Pastry Cat’s cookies were once sold at OffBeat Coffee on 600 Broadway in Upper Land Park, where it served as a pop-up.
Nariya Charoensupaya, the owner of Pastry Cat, wrote that her inspiration for the cafe came from a childhood love for pastries, desserts and cats.
“Ever since I was young, I have always had a special spot in my heart for desserts,” Charoensupaya wrote online. “My curiosity in this eventually led me to trying my hands at making pastry items as a hobby.”
Charoensupaya’s pastry chef journey began at the Culinary Institute of America, she wrote. After graduating in 2012 with a degree in Baking and Pastry Arts, Charoensupaya said she worked in a variety of kitchens, including a small bakery, a chocolate shop and Michelin starred restaurants.
Because of her experiences, she wrote that she believes in quality and consistency in her baking, a belief she brings to Pastry Cat.
“Everything I make is always made with love and genuine care,” Charoensupaya wrote. “My products will always reflect my values and the standards I hold as a pastry chef.”
Pastry Cat also serves other desserts, from almond croissants to Korean cream cheese garlic buns, cinnamon roll donuts and scones, according to the cafe’s Yelp page.
Pastry Cat began five years ago as a small business in the middle of the pandemic, Charoensupaya wrote. Reflecting on the cafe’s evolution into a brick and mortar location, she credited her friends, family and customers.
“Thank you for continuing to be there for us and waiting so patiently while we try to make things happen,” Charoensupaya wrote on social media. “We couldn’t do this without you guys.”
Pastry Cat is open Fridays to Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
