Comfort food contest: Vegan mac and cheese challenge coming to Sacramento

Vegan Outreach, a nonprofit committed to promoting veganism globally, recently announced that it will host a vegan macaroni and cheese competition in Sacramento.

According to a June 30 press release, the Sacramento Mac Down will take place Sunday, August 16, at the Jose Rizal Community Center located at 7320 Florin Mall Drive. From 4 to 6 p.m., attendees can sample macaroni and cheese creations from local chefs who specialize in vegan cooking. Attendees will then vote to award the title of the “Best Vegan Mac in Sacramento.”

According to Vegan Outreach, the current chef line-up includes chefs from regional business such as Vegan Circus and Elevated Eats, with more chefs slated to be announced.

In 2026, Mac Down competitions have taken place across the United States, in Springfield, Illinois, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and, in March, in Davis. The winner of the Davis Mac Down, Cali Vegan 707, will also be participating in the upcoming Sacramento event.

Tickets for the Sacramento Mac Down are available on the Vegan Chef Challenge website at $15 dollars. Non-vegans can use the code “TRYVegan” for $3 off tickets.
