Pepperidge Farm Sweet & Simple cookies
$4 for 5-ounce bag; local supermarkets; www.pepperidgefarm.com
Pepperidge Farms is getting back to cookie basics with its Sweet & Simple line of 11 “cookie jar classics,” made with “just a few, humble ingredients.” There’s a bit of nostalgia associated with crunchy, sugar-topped Gingerman and tangy Lemon, as there is with Shortbread and Sugar, Chessmen and Snickerdoodle.
Try
Tres Latin Foods pupusas
$4.99 for a four pack; Sprouts and Whole Foods; www.trespupusas.com
Pupusas, a staple of El Salvadorian cuisine, are ground corn cakes stuffed with beans, cheese, chilies or just about anything else a cook can dream up. This frozen version, first sold in a Colorado farmer’s market, is all organic and GMO-free, not to mention filled with rich and savory flavor – perfect for an easy dinner.
Order
Heirloom tomato and pancetta pizza
$22.50; Roma Pizzeria II (8491 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento); www.roma2pizza.com
Roma Pizzeria II’s “Pizza of the Month” program offers a changing, seasonal menu of unique thinner-crust pizzas. Its July selection – heirloom tomato and pancetta pizza – is continuing through August. It’s a marvel of flavors and textures – chewy crust, crisp bacon, gooey cheese, sweet tomato and bright herbal notes from the peppery arugula and fragrant basil.
Cook
Banza chickpea pasta
$3.49 for an 8-ounce box; Sprouts; www.eatbanza.com
This chickpea pasta has a backstory that’s as good as its flavor: The company (featured on reality TV show “Restaurant Startup”) was created by two brothers in Detroit who got their capital from a crowd-funding campaign. Now their elbows and shells are on the shelves of local groceries, serving up twice the protein and half the carbs of traditional pasta.
Pack
Wild Friends organic chocolate sunflower butter
99 cents for 1.15-ounce squeeze pack: various retailers; www.wildfriendsfoods.com
Kids are back in school and moms are busy filling lunchboxes. These single-serving (peanut-free) squeeze packs make a fun addition, in all-organic flavors such as chocolate, honey or maple flavors.
