Go
Sacramento Greek Festival

Labor Day weekend wouldn’t be complete without Sacramento’s annual Greek Festival, and it wouldn’t be a fest without the food. Some of the delicacies for sale: pastitsio (Greek lasagna), dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), tiropeta (cheese-filled filo pastry dough), paidakia (grilled lamb chops) and baklava (honey-drizzled filo, chopped nuts and cinnamon). For hours and other admission pricing: sacramentogreekfestival.com
Try
Robert Rothschild Farm Sriracha teriyaki sauce
$10.99 for 14-ounce bottle; Nugget markets; www.robertrothschild.com
With Sriracha showing up in just about everything from chocolate to beer, it’s easy to think this hot ingredient as overplayed. But then you’d miss out on this stellar, organic sauce, which hits the tongue with a bright burst of citrusy orange flavor and some substantial heat on the back end.
Go
Jewish Food Faire
Free admission; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 30; Congregation Beth Shalom (4746 El Camino Ave.,Carmichael)
Hit the 38th annual Jewish Food Faire for a cornucopia of specialty foods. Heap your plate with corned beef, pastrami, brisket, bagels and lox, latkes, stuffed cabbage, pastries and many more Jewish specialties. Most of the dishes for sale are handmade, but the festival also sources goods from Canter’s Deli in Los Angeles, Saul’s Deli in Berkeley and the kosher Grand Bakery in Oakland. Snack
Sugar Plum Vegan fruit and nut granola bar
$3 for a 3-ounce bar; Insight Coffee (various locations); www.sugarplumvegan.com
These blocky treats – more like logs than bars – are dense with raisins, dates, peanut butter and more. Brought to you by local vegan baker Melissa Sugar (who once made actress Marilu Henner a carrot cake for her wedding), they’re as delicious as they are nutritious.
Indulge
Susie Cakes orange creamsicle cupcake
$3.50 each; Susie Cakes (564 Pavilions Lane, Sacramento); www.susiecakes.com
Summer is winding down, and this seasonal specialty from scratch-bakery Susie Cakes is only available for one more week. Don’t miss out. Fluffy orange cake both topped and filled with a luscious, light buttercream frosting makes these treats an indulgence well worth the calories.
