Midtown Sacramento restaurant The Press Bistro to close, owner says

Midtown restaurant The Press Bistro will permanently close at the end of the year, chef/owner David English wrote in an email to customers Tuesday.

English opened the French- and Spanish-inspired bistro at 1809 Capitol Ave. in 2010. It will close for good Dec. 31, he said.

“We want to thank everyone who has come in and enjoyed the restaurant over the years – we appreciate all of you and we look forward to doing something else in the near future,” English’s email read. “Come in and enjoy The Press one more time – we hope to see you this last month!”

The Press Bistro earned four out of four stars from then-Sacramento Bee dining critic Blair Anthony Robertson, who called the restaurant “one of the best, most versatile bistro experiences going” in a 2015 review.

A Davis native, English cooked around the world for eight years and was named the Best New Chef in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina decimated the restaurant in which he was cooking in 2006. He returned to the Sacramento area and was Ella Dining Room & Bar’s first executive chef before leaving to open The Press Bistro.

In a June interview with The Bee, English said he had no interest in owning more than one restaurant due to the strain it would put on his family life.
