‘This one hurts.’ Another landmark Sacramento restaurant is closing for good

Update: The owners of Jim-Denny’s said Jan. 11 that they’ll keep the eatery open seven days a week until Feb. 2.

Original story:

Say it ain’t so, Jim Denny’s.

Jim-Denny’s Diner, the landmark downtown Sacramento eatery, is calling it a day, closing its doors at the end of January after 85 years. The diner’s owners broke the news Monday afternoon on Facebook in words as simple as its fare:

“Jim Denny’s will be open Wednesday-Sunday from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. through the end of January,” the post read. “After 85 wonderful years in Sacramento we will be closing our doors for good. Please share so everyone has a chance to say goodbye and thank you again to our loyal family and friends.”

Breakfast and brunch, hotcakes and eggs – and those hamburgers – Jim Denny’s sits in the heart of downtown at 816 12th St., a neon-signed reminder of a Sacramento before DoCo and farm-to-fork.

But after much of the last century and two decades into this one, it’s time for another Sacramento legend to sign off. Jim-Denny’s joins Mother, Cafe Marika, Hot Italian and the Sail Inn on a list of Sacramento-area restaurants to close in recent days.

Patron Casey Renee Miler posted a response sure to be echoed by fans of the diner across Sacramento.

It read simply, “This one hurts.”
