These 100+ Sacramento restaurants got federal PPP loans up to $2 million for COVID-19 relief

Help was needed, and it came.

More than 120 Sacramento restaurants, bars, grocery stores and other food businesses have received federal Paycheck Protection Program loans ranging from $150,000 to $2 million, according to public data made available Monday. More than $520 billion was distributed nationwide to almost 5 million businesses and nonprofits.

The loans are forgivable if businesses can prove they’ve used most of the money to pay staff, rent, utilities or a commercial mortgage.

PPP loans were awarded to LLCs, meaning some restaurateurs got separate grants for each of their brick-and-mortar businesses as well as holding companies. MAC Hospitality Group, for example, got $350,000 to $1 million for Public House Downtown and The Park Ultra Lounge as well as $150,000 to $350,000 for Iron Horse Tavern and MIX Downtown.

Although the loans were administered through the Small Business Administration, national giants such as Kanye West’s $3 billion clothing company Yeezy, sculptor Jeff Koons’ studio and businesses owned by West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice — the state’s richest man in the state — received millions while many mom-and-pop applications were rejected. PlumpJack winery and hospitality group, co-owned by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, also received $150,000 to $350,000, though Newsom placed the business in a blind trust upon taking office, unlike Justice.

Large chain franchisees were also eligible for the loans, and local Togo’s, Baskin Robbins, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and Black Bear Diner operators all took advantage.

Nonprofits such as WEAVE, Sacramento Self Help Housing, Sacramento SPCA and Roberts Family Development Center all got $350,000 to $1 million loans. Other businesses that received million of dollars apiece include DowneyBrand law firm , the Sacramento River Cats, Ethan Conrad Properties and the Sacramento area’s three largest private Catholic high schools.

The amounts were disclosed by the U.S. Treasury Department in ranges.
