Update: Shine co-owner Tyson Wells said he plans to reopen the cafe, with an exact date contingent on when Sacramento County’s indoor dining ban is lifted. Wells attributed the social media and website statements below to an internal miscommunication.

Downtown Sacramento just got a little bit darker.

Shine is closed for good after 10 years of coffee, concerts and food at 1400 E St., Suite A, according to a new header on its website and Instagram page. A sign on the cafe’s door last week said it was unable to remain open “due to COVID-19,” thanked customers for their support over the years and urged them to stay safe.

“Thank you, Sacramento, for all the great memories! It was a pleasure serving you for the past 10 years!” Shine’s website read.

Though Shine complemented its egg-based breakfast menu and stuffed grilled cheeses with an espresso bar, its role in the local art scene surpassed its culinary contributions. Framed paintings along the walls, frequent concerts and open mic nights twice a month gave Sacramento-area musicians, poets and visual artists a place to showcase their talents.

Shine briefly reopened in mid-June when indoor dining was permitted, but Sacramento County restaurants were forced to close two weeks later amid a surge in coronavirus cases. The cafe’s owners did not respond to a request for comment.
