Midtown Sacramento pizzeria known for giant slices and late hours closes permanently

Pizzeria Urbano is permanently closed in midtown Sacramento’s MARRS Building, owners Jose and Carlos Ulloa confirmed to The Sacramento Bee on Tuesday.

The brothers opened their pizzeria at 1050 20th St., Suite 150 in 2014, replacing another pizza-by-the-slice place and concert venue called Luigi’s Slice and Fun Garden that had been there for the previous seven years. Pizzeria Urbano made it almost that long before financial ramifications from the coronavirus pandemic forced the Ulloas to close.

Known for its enormous slices and long hours, Pizzeria Urbano was a logical next step for many people coming over from LowBrau or nearby Lavender Heights nightclubs, as well as people leaving Sacramento Comedy Spot. When the pandemic dried those bar scenes up, Pizzeria Urbano’s late-night traffic disappeared as well.

The Ulloas’ other restaurant, Azul Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar, remains open in the MARRS Building.

“We thank our community for supporting us. While this was a difficult decision we are thankful that our other restaurant Azul continues to remain open,” the Ulloas wrote in a Facebook message. “This is possible by the continued support from Sacramento. #sacramentostrong.”
