5 new restaurants open under 1 roof at new Davis food hall. Here’s what they’re serving

Davis doesn’t add new restaurants all that often. This spring, it’ll add five under one roof when Local Kitchens micro-food hall opens.

Sacramento-area fried chicken favorite Nash & Proper will make Local Kitchens home to its first Yolo County brick-and-mortar restaurant, the food hall announced in a press release Tuesday morning. The other four spots will be filled by popular Bay Area brands Señor Sisig, The Melt, Sushirrito and Oren’s Hummus.

Local Kitchens will replace Pluto’s in Davis Commons, a downtown shopping center at 500 1st St. It marks a return for The Melt, which served gourmet grilled cheeses and macaroni and cheese from another Davis Commons unit from 2013-15.

Burrito lovers will have plenty of options. Señor Sisig’s Filipino-inspired wraps throw ingredients like sweetened pork together with adobo garlic rice and guacamole, while Sushiritto pioneered the sushi burrito concept that became popular in the mid-2010s. Oren’s Hummus adapts flavors from the founder’s Tel Aviv roots for dips, pita wraps and Israeli dishes such as shakshuka.

“We are excited to open so close to the UC Davis campus and provide students and families with great menu choices in a convenient format that makes getting a bite to eat between classes or on the way home from work really easy,” Local Kitchens CEO Jon Goldsmith said. “Our brand partners represent a mix of diverse choices that we feel will add a lot to the food options available in (d)owntown Davis. We look forward to opening the Davis location in the near future and continuing our brand expansion throughout California!”

Launched in summer 2020 by a group of former DoorDash employees, Local Kitchens now has six locations and three more underway in addition to Davis (Campbell, Novato and Los Gatos). A Roseville food hall that opened last month was the first location outside the Bay Area.

Additional restaurants will eventually open in Local Kitchen’s 2,500-square foot Davis space, according to the press release.
