Downtown tap house Capital Hop Shop closes, to be replaced by new restaurant/bar
Capital Hop Shop shut down for good after service Sunday, according to the downtown Sacramento tap house’s social media pages.
The restaurant and beer bar’s impending demise was first announced Friday, and the last pints were poured at 1431 I St. by around 7 p.m. Sunday.
Owners Ken Hotchkiss and Patti Aguirre founded Capital Hop Shop in 2017 as a more central, food-serving sister concept to their bottle shop in The UV plaza, Capital Beer and Tap Room. The latter remains open at 2222 Fair Oaks Blvd.
While the 30-plus craft beers rotating through Capital Hop Shop’s taps were a major draw, the food was far from an afterthought. Kate Washington, The Sacramento Bee’s former dining critic, praised Capital Hop Shop’s salads, poutine and burgers in a 2018 review.
Hotchkiss and Aguirre sold their downtown tap house to Cristin and Scott Prenez earlier this year, the Sacramento Business Journal reported. The Prenezes plan to open their own taproom called Mojo’s Local, with craft beer and food as well as sake and wine.
