One of Sacramento’s most acclaimed restaurants plans to relocate next year, moving into the city proper.

The Kitchen, a prix fixe dinner restaurant earning a Michelin star in 2019, 2021 and this year, will move in 2023 from 2225 Hurley Way in Sacramento County’s Arden Arcade neighborhood to 915 Broadway in Land Park.

The planned move, first reported Monday by the Sacramento Business Journal, has been several years in the making.

“We’ve been looking for a number of years — five, six, seven years,” Josh Nelson, chief financial officer for Selland Family Restaurants, which operates The Kitchen, told The Sacramento Bee on Monday.

Selland Family Restaurants runs other restaurants in Sacramento including Ella Dining Room and Bar as well as three Selland’s Market Cafe locations, one of which is also at the 915 Broadway property.

The restaurant group first planned to move The Kitchen to that address in 2015, but instead ended up opening Selland’s Market Cafe there. The new Kitchen location will be on the opposite side of the same building.

“It’s the most accessible corridor in the region,” Nelson said. “Broadway’s a pretty special district — it’s 10 minutes from a lot of places …. It’s a great spot for a regional restaurant.”

The restaurant group plans to keep Selland’s Market Cafe open at the site as The Kitchen moves in, he said.

The group in July filed planning documents with the city to make exterior and interior modifications for a new tenant at the 915 Broadway property. Those plans were approved in October, according to the city’s planning application webpage.

Nelson said there had initially been concerns that the Broadway space would be too small, but that with some shuffling of layout, the roughly 4,000 square feet of space inside the 15,000-square-foot building should be sufficient.

The Kitchen’s current location is about 4,200 square feet, Nelson said, but about 1,000 square feet of that is made up of office space.

The Kitchen originally opened in 1991 and has been at its Arden Arcade location since 1998.

The lease on the Hurley Way location is expiring in 2023, Nelson said. He expects the restaurant will remain in that location until at least July.
