New Helvetia is struggling and facing eviction, Sacramento brewery owners say. Here’s why
Sacramento’s New Helvetia Brewing Company is facing challenging times. This time, the struggles are due to the repercussions of the pandemic, its owners say.
Though the COVID-19 emergency declaration has concluded, the brewery said Friday it continues to bear the weight of its lingering impact.
“The pandemic led us to fall behind on our rent payments, and our landlord, a fellow small business owner and part of our community, is rightfully seeking the resolution of this matter,” the company said in an Instagram post. “New Helvetia is facing the very real prospect of eviction and closure.”
Back in 2019, The Sacramento Bee reported that owner Dave Gull said the brewery’s shortcomings were caused by the relatively high homeless population under the Interstate 80 overpass, frightening customers at the Land Park location.
Now, the brewery said escalating costs and diminishing revenue caused by the pandemic have cast doubts on its future at 18th Street and Broadway.
“We remain firm in our belief that New Helvetia can overcome these adversities,” the company said in the post. “We can rally together to demonstrate that our brewery is not just a business but a cherished community asset worth preserving. “
To grow the business, the company said it now offers “delectable food” to complement its beer selection.
The food options, according to the company’s website, include: street tacos, bratwurst, a bacon jam burger, BLTs and a fried Asian chicken sandwich.
