Sacramento home bakers are sharing their goods at a free dessert picnic Saturday

Beat the heat with a sampling of sweet treats this weekend.

On Saturday, capital region cottage bakers are gathering for Sugar Social, a free dessert picnic inspired by the highly successful Cake Picnic in San Francisco.

Bakers Vy Nguyen and Gabbie Gonzales set up the picnic through their organization, Micro but Mighty Bakers, to help elevate Sacramento’s cottage baker community.

“We want to become a resource (for aspiring cottage bakers),” said Nguyen.

Sugar Social will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the CLARA Studios — the E. Claire Raley Studios for the Performing Arts — at 2420 N St., Annex 180, in midtown. Advance registration is required on Eventbrite.

On Thursday afternoon, Nguyen estimated 130 people had registered for Sugar Social, more than she anticipated. She is limiting RSVPs to 200 people.

Baking a dessert is not required — Nguyen suggests bringing something from a local bakery or cottage baker if you don’t bake. Participants are encouraged to donate to the picnic if they don’t bring a dessert.

Nguyen said bakers at every step of their baking journey are attending.

BennyJann Peneyra, professional pastry chef at Chu Mai in Sacramento, is bringing a matcha-cheesecake swiss roll, while Chez Chibi, a new cottage bakery, will be making its debut with macarons, she said.

Hobby and non-licensed bakers are also encouraged to share their creations.

“We don’t want to exclude anyone, because there may be up-and-coming cottage bakers who aren’t licensed yet or who are looking to get licensed,” Nguyen said. “Maybe they don’t even know they want to be a cottage baker, this might ... open that door.”
