Sacramento airport dining update takes off with its first new restaurant opening
The Sacramento International Airport opened the first major restaurant in its dining concessions revitalization Wednesday with the debut of West Coast Sourdough in Terminal A.
At a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Sacramento County and airport officials, West Coast Sourdough began serving travelers as the airport’s dining upgrade moved forward. The opening is the first of several restaurants and cafes planned as part of a broader revamp of airport concessions.
“Today we take the first tangible step in transforming the dining experience at SMF,” said Sacramento County director of airports Cindy Nichol in a news release. “By partnering with locally owned businesses like West Coast Sourdough and aligning our concessions program with our community’s unique identity, we’re building an airport that serves both the traveler and the region.”
West Coast Sourdough, a Sacramento-rooted chain, is known for its soup bread bowls and sourdough sandwiches. The company operates 15 restaurants across the capital region, from Vacaville to Placerville, and more than 60 locations statewide.
“Opening at Sacramento International Airport is a major milestone,” West Coast Sourdough owner Robbie Bassi said in the news release. “I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity ... We’re excited to build a long-lasting relationship here and to serve our fresh sourdough sandwiches, soups, and salads to travelers and airport staff for many years to come.”
According to airport spokesperson Lindsay Myers, a second West Coast Sourdough opened in Terminal B, replacing the former Vino Volo wine bar. The Terminal A location took over spaces previously occupied by Peet’s Coffee and Freshii.
Both restaurants are open daily from 4 a.m. until the airport’s final departure of the night, Myers said.
More than a dozen new restaurants and quick-service concepts are planned for both terminals, including OneSpeed Pizza, Nixtaco, BAWK! by Urban Roots, Magpie Cafe and Midtown Spirits.
The Sacramento County Department of Airports announced plans to rotate the capital region hub’s dining options in early 2024. The full concessions rollout was initially scheduled for completion by January 2026, but the timeline has since shifted. Openings are now expected to continue “throughout 2025–2026,” according to the airport’s website.
