A dessert concept built for sweet-tooth cravings and Instagram feeds is coming to Roseville and Rocklin, featuring customizable mini donuts, ice cream creations and energy drink mixers.

Sugar Llamas, a Tulsa, Oklahoma-based franchise, plans to open in Roseville and Rocklin by late summer.

The shop will feature customizable mini donuts topped with drizzles and flavors such as cotton candy, chocolate chip pancake and strawberry shortcake. It also offers ice cream creations like the Llama Smash, which sandwiches two scoops of ice cream between halves of a warm bundt cake.

The menu also will include espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos, along with caffeine alternatives like Red Bull-based mixers.

Travis Hawkins, owner of Oxygenics in Sparks, Nevada, said he and his wife had spent years searching for a new business opportunity. He considered opening an ice cream parlor, a donut shop or a coffee shop before discovering a concept that combined all three: Sugar Llamas.

He flew out to meet with the company, which was founded in 2021.

“This option kind of piqued my interest. I liked their angle, so I flew out to and met with Dallas and Robin, the owners,” Hawkins explained. “I liked the concept. After I got to try the food and drinks, I liked it even more.”

He said after researching and talking with them, he knew it was the right direction.

Hawkins said he is excited to bring a youth-inspired space to the area. He said the concept was expected to appeal to teens and families, but other locations have drawn a strong college-age following.

“The original initial target was teens and families. They found the largest demographic that comes to the store is college youth,” he said.

The rollout timeline remains uncertain. While target dates have been set, which location will open first has not been finalized, Hawkins said.

“The target is July 15 for the first one and two to four weeks after the second one,” he said.

Hawkins said the buildout was expected to move quickly and that the two Placer stores mark the start of a broader Northern California and Nevada expansion.

“They talked me into doing a territory instead of just a franchise, and so we ended up buying the rights to Northern California and Nevada.”

The goal for the territory is to open 10 stores within five years, according to Hawkins.

He is joined by his brother, Tyler Hawkins, as a co-owner of the territory. The first store they plan to open is in Modesto.
