Sacramento adds over 12,000 jobs. It’s largely thanks to these sectors

Sacramento is up more than 12,000 jobs in October compared to September, totaling more than 1 million jobs — the highest job total since before the pandemic began, according to data from the Employment Development Department of Labor Market Information Division.

With a revised unemployment rate of 5.3% in October 2021 from 5.5% in September 2021 and below the year-ago estimate of 8%, Sacramento’s job market shows improvement.

From September to October, employment in Sacramento increased by 12,200 jobs to a total of 1,018,000.

Here are the job sectors that contributed to Sacramento’s employment growth provided by the Department of Labor and Statistics, with average earnings for each sector:

GOVERNMENT

(6,700 jobs added): The government sector reported the largest gains in October. Within the sector, local and state governments were responsible for the increase.

Most of those jobs were in the public education field.

The recent median annual earnings commonly found in education administrators is $98,490.

Elementary, middle and secondary school teachers earn a median annual wage of between about $60,970 and $62,870.

TRADE, TRANSPORTATION AND UTILITIES

(2,600 jobs added): within the trade, transportation and utility sector, retail trade was responsible for all the job gains for the industry as seasonal hiring began.

The recent hourly earnings commonly found within retail trade is $22.05 an hour within about a 31-hour work week.

PROFESSIONAL AND BUSINESS SERVICES

(2,200 jobs added): The professional and business services sector reported gains in professional, scientific and technical services. But administrative and support and waste services account for 86% of the growth.

The recent hourly earnings in administrative and support and waste services are $24.72 an hour within about a 35-hour work week. While hourly earnings in professional, scientific and technical services are $45.63 an hour within a 37-hour work week.
