USPS to hire mail carriers, mechanics and more in Sacramento area. How to apply
Looking for work? The U.S. Postal Service is hiring mail carriers, mechanics and more.
You can apply in person at a handful of USPS job fairs in Northern California in January.
“If you enjoy taking walks, breathing in fresh air, and serving your community, the Postal Service is a great place to work, with job security, career advancement opportunities and benefits,” the federal agency said in a Tuesday, Nov. 4, news release.
The hiring events are designed to help jobseekers set up their online profiles to apply for open positions.

When are USPS job fairs in Northern California? Where?
The U.S. Postal Service is planning a few in-person job fairs in the Sacramento area in January. Here’s when and where:
- Friday, Jan. 9: Auburn Post Office, 371 Nevada St., in Auburn, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Monday, Jan. 12: Mark Sanders Job Center, 2901 50th St., in Sacramento, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Friday, Jan 16: West Sacramento Post Office, 3775 Industrial Blvd., in West Sacramento, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Monday, Jan. 26: Mark Sanders Job Center, 2901 50th St., in Sacramento, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
USPS will also host job fairs in Hayward, Fremont, Alameda and Concord in January.
Which jobs are the US Postal Service filling?
“The Postal Service has an immediate need” for mail processing, delivery, transportation and maintenance roles, the agency said in the release.
The USPS said it’s looking to fill the following positions:
- Mail clerk
- Mail handler
- City mail carrier
- Rural mail carrier
- Tractor trailer operator
- Mechanic
- Laborer custodian
- Automotive technician

What are requirements for USPS positions?
According to the Postal Service, all applicants must be 18 years or older with the ability to pass drug screenings and criminal background checks.
You must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status.
“Some positions require an exam,” the Postal Service said.
If you’re applying for a job that requires driving, you’ll need a valid California driver’s license and a “clean” two-year driving history, according to USPS.
What benefits do postal workers get?
The Postal Service said it offers a “competitive compensation and benefits package” that includes regular salary increases, overtime pay and higher wages for night shifts and Sundays.
Postal workers can take advantage of federal health insurance plans with dental and vision coverage, as well as long-term care, life insurance and federal retirement benefits.
In addition, USPS employees get sick leave, up to 26 days of vacation per year and 11 annual paid holidays.
“Career development and training initiatives” are also available, the Postal Service said.
