The Sears anchor stores at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights and the Westfield Galleria at Roseville shopping complex will be closed in July this year, an official with Sears Holdings Corp. confirmed Tuesday.
The closings are the latest in a series of store closures announced by Sears, which, like other retailers with numerous brick-and-mortar sites, has struggled to compete against online giant Amazon.com and discount, high-volume retailer Walmart.
The Sears location at Arden Fair mall in Sacramento remains open, as does the Sears store at 5901 Florin Road south of downtown Sacramento.
Howard Riefs , a spokesman for SHC, the Illinois-based holding company, said in an email: "We can confirm that Seritage Growth Properties is recapturing the Sears stores in Citrus Heights and Roseville as part of an agreement reached in 2015 between Seritage and Sears Holdings. As a result, these stores will close in mid-July 2018."
SHC sold 265 Sears and Kmart store locations to New York-based Seritage in 2015 as part of an agreement in which Sears Holdings leased the stores back from Seritage.
Riefs said the local Sears stores "will remain open for customers in the meantime and will begin their liquidation sales by April 27."
Riefs said "the number of associates is not publicly available. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. "
He added: "We understand that members may be disappointed when we close a store, but our Shop Your Way membership platform, websites and mobile apps allow us to maintain these valued relationships long after a store closes its doors. As a result, we hope to retain a portion of the sales previously associated with this store by maintaining our relationships with the members who shopped this location."
Riefs was responding to a request for details amid a Business Insider report that 16 Sears and Kmart stores in nine states would be shuttered, including the Sears stores in Citrus Heights and Roseville.
Business Insider's closure list also included Sears stores at Solano Town Center in Fairfield, one in El Cajon and another in Meadowood Mall in Reno.
Just days into the start of this year, Sears Holdings Corp. announced that it would close more than 100 stores in March and April 2018. That included 64 of its Kmart stores and 39 of its Sears sites.
