From ancient relic to super modern home: ‘Flawless masterpiece’ for sale at $8.65 million
Described as “a flawless masterpiece,” a modernist home in Oregon with spectacular views of famous mountain peaks is on the market for $8.65 million, and comes with quite a story of how it came to be built.
The 11,807-square-foot Lakota Residence was inspired by an ancient relic stone wall that a couple discovered while hiking. This is where they built their house.
Architect Ned Vaivoda said his clients “were out ... exploring the woods, and they came across this relic, a demolished ancient house. It was just a wall, a stone wall,” according to the Christies International Real Estate listing. “And around this stone wall, they would build a modernist home.”
The four-bedroom, eight-bath home is a layered structure that sits on 10 sloping acres in Portland, Oregon’s coveted Forest Park neighborhood.
“The juxtaposition between ancient and modernist created a stunning design against views of the Cascade Mountain Range including Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Rainier and Mount Adams,” wrote TopTenRealEstateDeals.com. The real estate website published photos of the house, which can be seen in the video above.
The ancient wall that sparked the concept for the house was built using travertine, a limestone formed by hot springs. The owners, architect and builder chose to use the special rock in the design, even though travertine is mostly used for commercial projects. It’s part of an eclectic design using many materials: African slate, Indian and Brazilian granite, Chinese quartzite, Middle Eastern onyx, African rosewood and sheets of stainless steel and glass.
The main level, where visitors enter the home, offers entertaining, dining and living space.
Private quarters with bedrooms and an office occupy the top level.
With an open floor plan and glass-wall side, the house also features a chef’s kitchen.
The lower level is punctuated by a 50-foot indoor lap pool and opens to expansive patios, lush lawn and natural forest beauty. An elevator serves the three floors.
There are two custom guest suites, as well as a separate 1,127-square-foot, fully outfitted guest quarters.
The house was the most expensive house for sale in Portland in 2018, according to The Oregonian. Ground was broken for construction in 2000.
Listed for sale in 2018, this is the first time the house at 9912 NW Wind Ridge Drive has been on the market, according to TopTenRealEstateDeals.
The home is listed by Terry Sprague, LUXE Christie’s International Realty, Portland.
Portland’s Forest Park is one of the country’s largest urban parks. The park has 5,200 acres and more than 80 miles of hiking trails along the eastern slope of the Tualatin Mountains where the Columbia and Willamette rivers converge.
“It was the incredible collaboration between architect Ned Vaivoda, Mike Bradley of Distinctive Homes Construction and the owners that resulted in this masterful residence,” the listing notes.
“The exterior draws you in with its combination of architectural mastery, privacy and stunning views of the Pacific Northwest’s most famous mountain peaks while the interior’s incredible open space, creative architectural details and use of stone, wood and glass elements keeps its hold on you.”
