Bee’s Best: Tyler Petersen wins Football Prep of the Week vote

Tyler Petersen started with modest numbers this season, then warmed up, heated up and took off.

The Vista del Lago High School senior running back opened with a 24-carry, 64-yard, no touchdown effort in a 38-22 setback to Granite Bay, found his footing and hasn’t slowed down as he has helped power the Falcons into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

Petersen’s most meaningful game was his last one, on Friday in Oak Park, where he rushed 34 times for 250 yards and two touchdowns, including the game winner, to lead a 45-40 effort over Christian Brothers in Capital Athletic League play.

Petersen kept rolling. He won The Bee’s Prep of the Week football honors this week in a landslide through fan voting. He took 53% of the thousands of votes.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Petersen in nine games has rushed for 1,361 yards on 212 carries for a 6.4-yard average. He has scored 13 rushing touchdowns and 15 total. He averages 151.2 yards per game to provide balance with quarterback Jakob Hollingshaus. Not bad for a guy who was just finding his footing in spring action when he rushed for 169 yards in four games on 21 carries for two scores.

Petersen’s best games include the 127-yard, two touchdown effort in a 48-40 win over Casa Roble and his 275-yard, four score game to beat Placer 47-37.

Vista (6-3) closes the regular season with a CAL game tonight against visiting Sacramento. The playoffs start next week.
