A veteran race car driver died after crashing Saturday night during an annual competition at the Marysville Raceway.

Shawn McCoy was involved in a single-vehicle crash during lap 14 of the final race of the Taxicab Challenge, the raceway said in a Facebook post.

Four divisions of cars competed at the track, about 40 miles north of Sacramento.

McCoy had raced in more than 800 events and was a regular at Petaluma Speedway, the post said, adding that he “was well respected in the racing community.”
